Meet Carol Dolan of the Fox River Grove Memorial Library

By Katie Walthall, Publisher Mom of Macaroni Kid CaryGrove-Barrington-Palatine October 5, 2017

There is no doubt that here at Macaroni Kid we LOVE our local libraries! They provide a free place for families to connect, learn and play right within our community. They are warm, inviting, and full of life thanks largely to our fabulous children's librarians. So, we thought it would be fun to learn a little more about the people who keep the children's departments at our local libraries striving with a new column introducing you to some of the wonderful employees you might just bump into while there. In this article you will get to know Carol Dolan of the Fox River Grove Memorial Library a little better through a brief Q&A.

How long have you worked at FRGML?
17 and 1/2 years

What made you want to work at a library? What did you do before you worked at the library?
I started working at the FRGML part-time at the same time I worked at a local preschool. I was offered a more stable job at the library and accepted. I love working with children and seeing how they learn how to read and discover new things through reading.

What is your favorite part about working at the library?
In addition to working with the children and watching them learn to read and discover books, I love decorating the Youth Services department. Each month we choose a theme and make colorful eye-catching decorations for the doors, bulletin boards and walls in the department.

What is your favorite book? What is your favorite children's book?
One in the same, Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie! I collect Peter Pan books, finding them at book sales, resale stores and the internet.

What is your favorite book series?
I really enjoyed reading the books Chasing Vermeer, The Wright 3 and The Calder Game by Blue Balliett. The three books have the same main characters and the stories take place in the Chicago area.

What is your favorite program offered by the FRGML?
Of course I love the Story Time sessions we offer our young patrons. We read stories, sing songs and make fun take home crafts each week. I enjoy watching the children grow and move from the baby story time to the sessions for the older children.

What is something people should know about the library that they probably don't know?
The library has so much more to offer than just books! We have a great collection of DVDs for adults and children, audio books, tablets for children, wifi hotspots and even fishing poles. There are digital resources on the Library's website for downloading ebooks, audiobooks and magazines.

Anything else you would like to share about yourself or the library
It is so fun to see how patrons react when they discover the Youth Services Department, which is located in the lower level of the Library. They get excited about the materials and programs that are offered and the manipulative toys, including a train table and LEGO wall, that we have for our young patrons.
